The English Pavillion

In the English Pavilion there were a series of lists of twin towns. To read this you had to go through a long corridor. The names of the twin towns were written down on a big white wall. This corridor was designed in a white light room, which was too harsh.
After that corridor you came into a very small room, this time it was black. In this room there were lights which were vertical reaching from the ceiling to the ground. When you were standing before these lights and interrupted with your hand the light you could hear a sound.
You could chose how many sounds you liked to hear, by breaking lights simul-taneously. Unfortunately this room was very stuffy and too small. Nevertheless  the idea of this project was not too bad, as it was a lot fun to experiment with the lights and sounds.
If you left this room you could see the inside of the pavilion. On the left side there was a light dome, if you looked at this you saw on the outside wall that they were working with light, because the outside wall was shinning in different colours. You also heard music from there.
If you looked right at first you saw a big table, where there was a model of Scot-land. Behind the table you looked onto a wall. On this wall you saw many natu-ral products for example different kinds of wood, grass, moos and much more. The special topic of this exhibition of nature products was that they looked un-real, but if you touched them you felt that it was real.

Then going on you came to columns. In them there were preserved mini animals standing for economic balance. Probably England has searched these animals, because of some people they have a revolting effect,  but nevertheless for the balance of nature they are very valuable. In the other columns there were butter-flies, made of paper in different colours. If you stood before the column you could see a red button on the ground, which blew the butterflies through  the col-umn and in addition the light was shinning in different colours which caused a relaxed atmosphere.
To reach the dome you had to cross a bridge, because it was standing in water. In this dome there were many little TVs in a blue wall. People, culture, architec-ture, design and music were shown in this part. After a few minutes one side of the wall began to move, which was standing on a stage. Behind the wall was a screen,  which  showed everything that was also on the TVs. At the same time you heard the song „Bitter Sweet Symphony“ from „The Verve“ a classical mu-sic which was combined with new style of the music. The pictures you had seen were very short but together with the sound of the music it was very emotional.

Our opinion is that England only presented itself, the people and the culture. England  did not exaggerate but also they did not use understatement. It was one of the best pavilions we have seen. Nevertheless it might have been nicer with a few windows in the walls.
